Texas lash license guide
How to Get a Texas Lash License (TDLR Eyelash Extension Specialist)
Want to lash clients for pay in Texas? You need a license from the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR). Here's the full path to the Eyelash Extension Specialist license, from your first day of school to your first paying client, plus the most common mistake new lash artists make.
Certification vs. license: the difference that matters
Lots of companies sell 1-, 2-, or 3-day "lash certification" classes. They can be a great way to sharpen classic, hybrid, or volume technique, but a certificate is not a license. In Texas, applying eyelash extensions for compensation requires a TDLR license: Eyelash Extension Specialist, Esthetician, or Cosmetology Operator. If your goal is to get paid for lashes, start with a TDLR approved 320-hour program.
5 steps to a Texas lash license
1. Enroll in a TDLR-licensed school with an approved 320-hour course
Texas requires 320 hours of instruction in an Eyelash Extension Specialist course at a licensed school. Each school has to get its 320-hour curriculum approved by TDLR, so ask any program you're considering whether its lash course is TDLR approved. While you train, TDLR issues you a student permit.
2. Complete your hours (theory plus hands-on practice)
The 320 hours cover sanitation and safety, Texas rules and laws, client consultation, eyelash growth cycles, product theory, and lots of supervised application. Some schools put part of the theory online, but TDLR caps distance learning at no more than 50% of a course's total hours, so hands-on time in the classroom is unavoidable.
3. Get your exam eligibility and apply for your license
Once your school reports your hours, TDLR verifies your eligibility and its testing vendor, PSI, emails you instructions to schedule your exams. You can apply for the license online. The application fee is $50 and non-refundable. If you apply before your written exam, a temporary license prints once you pass both exams.
4. Pass the written and practical exams
You take a written exam and a practical exam. Background checks have to clear before TDLR sends your practical eligibility to PSI. After you pass the practical, the temporary license that prints with your score report lets you start working that same day. It's good for 60 days while your two-year license arrives in the mail.
5. Start lashing, then renew every two years
Your Eyelash Extension Specialist license is valid for two years. Keep it current and you can work in a salon, suite, or your own licensed studio anywhere in Texas.
What it costs
Budget for tuition, your lash kit, and the $50 TDLR application fee (PSI exam fees are separate and set by the vendor). At The Lash Institute, tuition is $4,999 with a $600 deposit to hold your seat. That includes a student lash kit, ongoing mentorship, product discounts, and payment plans.
Getting licensed in Weatherford and the west side of DFW
Most DFW lash schools are in Dallas or the northern suburbs. The Lash Institute trains students at 1508 Santa Fe Dr, Ste 204 in Weatherford, an easy drive from Fort Worth, Aledo, Granbury, Mineral Wells, Azle, and Parker County. Our 8 weeks TDLR approved program meets Monday & Tuesday, 9:00am – 2:00pm. Wednesdays available for makeup hours and extra practice. You'll train in classic, hybrid, and volume, plus the sanitation, law, and business basics the state exams cover.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a cosmetology license to do lash extensions in Texas?

320 hours of instruction in an Eyelash Extension Specialist course at a TDLR-licensed school.
Is a 2- or 3-day lash certification enough to work in Texas?

How old do I have to be?
You must be at least 17 years old to apply for the license.
How long is the license good for?
Eyelash Extension Specialist licenses are valid for two years from the date of issue.
